(3-4 minute read)
First thing is first, Stop being so obsessed with losing weight, getting skinny, getting lean etc. Even if you DO truly need to lose weight for health purposes, focusing on this alone will get you nowhere fast. We are so much more than our bodies, so when things get tough its easy to quit because we’ve only been focused on something that holds such little value.
For many people, their ‘need’ for weight loss comes from socially constructed ideals and messages that in order to be happy, be fulfilled, be successful, etc. we must look a certain way. Let me tell you that’s FAR from the truth.
Usually, it’s quite the opposite when you are strictly chasing certain physique goals. Because you become so consumed in dieting and exercise, you risk losing friends, family time, piece of mind, true sense of health, the list goes on. Not only that but you start to see exercise and food as things that only serve a single purpose (losing weight), which typically leads to an unhealthy relationship with both. So sure, weight loss may be happening but is any of that worth it? I can tell you from first hand experience, it is NOT.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t ever have a desire to lose weight because for some people, this will improve their health and help them feel better. BUT what you have to understand here is that weight loss is simply a result of eating and exercise IN ORDER TO feel better and improve your health. When done correctly, weight loss is just an additional benefit of something so much more important and valuable.
So here’s what I ask if you are trying to lose weight. Instead of focusing merely on that. Shift your attention to building the habits you need to:
Feel better (drink more water, get better sleep, move around more)
Improve your health (eat more veggies, balance your meals, take proper supplements)
Get stronger (lift weights!!!!)
And for those of you that think you need to lose weight (but don’t really NEED to), maybe your REAL goal is really just feeling comfortable in your skin. Which at the end of the day, comes down to the decision to be confident. Confidence truly is the most attractive thing you can wear. Even better, it’s also something you can have instantly. You just need to decide to let go of the idea that a better you is a smaller you. A better you is a you that takes care of yourself and takes pride in doing so. You can do that at any size.
At the end of the day, it wouldn’t hurt anyone to focus on eating well and moving their body more. Those two things (along with our thoughts towards ourselves) are the ultimate forms of self respect. And when you practice those habits regularly, you will begin to feel more and more amazing.
The more amazing you feel, the harder it becomes to hate your body. You begin to appreciate your body for ALL it does for you. Really, why be anything but proud when you are giving your body everything it needs to thrive and it’s keeping you alive and moving.
Focusing only on how you look will never get you what you really want. I can promise you that.
Put fourth all your attention to habits of self respect. If you do need to lose weight, that’ll happen naturally when this is in place.
