How to lose weight without dieting

(2-3 minute read)
 

Let’s get right into it. FIRST – don’t consider what you are doing as a diet, you can still apply strategies to lose weight but don’t you dare call it a diet! Diets imply two things:

 

  1. They an end date. Getting healthier should never have an end date.
  2. They are restrictive. Restriction is like a bow and arrow. the father you pull back the farther the arrow is going to shoot ( the more you restrict the larger the rebound).

 

So your first step in losing weight without dieting is to PLEASE not get habit changes confused with dieting. Habit changes allow you freedom, which leads me to my next point:

Consistency > perfection (do I say this in every newsletter???) Diets typically come with the black & white // all or nothing mentality. So what happens here? You do everything you’re supposed to be doing, things are going great!!! But then real life presents itself, you ‘fall of the wagon’ & you might as well just start again on Monday, right? Tell me how well that chain of events has worked for you so far….

Live your life but don’t be an asshole when it comes to food. You know what is too much and when you are surpassing your fullness cues. I know people hate hearing this but everything in moderation holds a lot of merit. Do what you know you need to do most of the time but don’t deprive yourself, it’s pretty simple! Have a slip up? Cool, we all do. Now just get right back to your routine like nothing happened and you’ll be golden. You wouldn’t slash your other three tires if one got flat, right? You’d fix the flat and keep driving. Same thing here.

Leading from that, build the discipline that form the habits you need to reach your goal. For the context of this newsletter, lets say weight loss is the goal. perfect, we have the goal, now what systems to we need to create to reach that outcome? Well, watching what you eat & exercising, it’s pretty straight forward yet we can’t seem to stick with them. Why is that?

I find the biggest reason is you’re only attaching weight loss to these habits. You’re only trying to eat healthy because it will help you lose fat. You’re only trying to exercise because it will help you lose fat. If these are your only reasons for working on these habits, they’re NEVER going to stick or be enjoyable. Why?????

Because losing fat or being in a smaller body is a very insignificant part of your life as a whole. Eating well and exercising are both forms of self respect. They create a better, stronger, faster, smarter, more capable you! You need to start seeing exercise and eating well for more than just fat loss. They are both complete life enhancers, weight loss is just an extra benefit. 

On that note, MAKE IT FUN! Put effort into making nutritious foods taste amazing, try new recipes, explore different cuisines. Can we finally nix the myth that eating well has to be boring?! On the exercise side, try a new class at a gym or studio near by, grab some friends and sign up for an event you can do together. The possibilities are endless with being active, step outside the box and try something new! We make this whole fitness thing way harder and way more boring than it actually is / can be. 

Next, think about the person you want to become. What does that person’s daily habits look like? What kind of choices does that person make on a day to day basis? Follow the suit of your ideal self and you will become that : )

Another important thing – stop letting the scale dictate your progress and MOOD. I could write a whole other newsletter about the scale. Long story short, it’s only one form of measurement & it doesn’t take into account A LOT of variables. Also, it’s not always going to be consistently dropping. A huge mistake I see so often is someone getting discouraged that the scale isn’t moving and simply giving up. When if they were just to be patient and keep going, changes would start happening. The time is going to pass anyway, better start accepting that lasting change takes a long time. Buckle in or don’t even bother. 

To wrap this up. Stop dieting and start building habits that move the needle closer to your goal. Stay focused on those habits and remember all the additional benefits you will get from them. Celebrate those benefits and reinforce them. Remind yourself it’s not all about weight loss, it’s about creating a better version of you that takes care of yourself in order to live a better, more fulfilling life. Make decisions that support the person you want to be. Think – what would future me do?? And take the proper action.
